Bienville Project

2020

In this small duplex in Montreal’s Plateau Mont-Royal neighborhood, the challenge was to maximize natural light by opening up the living spaces, as well as by adding new windows facing the inner courtyard. Although modest in size, the courtyard lies at the heart of the project, and its design was carefully considered. The strong presence of wood brings warmth and serenity to this urban setting where concrete often dominates. The abundant use of plants makes the space feel vibrant, a quality that is also felt inside the small apartment.

A Unified Living Space

Inside, the living area was completely opened up, transforming what was once four small rooms into one large space. The addition of French doors leading to the courtyard creates a direct connection between the two areas and allows natural light to flood the interior. The exposed brick wall was preserved and highlighted through the choice of kitchen materials.
